Remarks By UNILAG VC, Prof. Rahamon Bello, At The Annual Research Conference

It is my pleasure and privilege to welcome you all to University of Lagos and to the 11th University of Lagos Annual Research Conference and Fair.

Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, with Nigeria in recession the need to re-engineer the fabrics of our economic activities to ensure a solid and virile base is urgent. This can only be achieved if Nigeria has a productive economy where the larger chunk of its material needs are produced locally with the attendant optimal use of our agricultural and natural resources.

The only way to cushion this and sustain it is through appropriate research into our economic activities, and use of our raw agricultural and natural resources with the aim of establishing novel and viable processes for their uses and applications and by extension export to other users outside of the nation.

The conference is intended to catalyze the urgent linkage between researchers and the industry to enhance the economic development of the nation.

The University of Lagos established a Research and Innovation Unit about three years ago. One of its cardinal functions apart from stimulating inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary researches is to assist researchers to identify patentable works and further expose the results of research to end-users to stimulate the economy.

The Unit has taken this challenge and has effectively been narrowing the gap between Academic and the Industry through a two-way linkage.

In the last one year various interactions between SME operators and researchers in the University ensued as well as interactions between different MAN groups and researchers in the University. We are beginning to have the feel of the linkages as we expect industry-driven/sponsored researches to become prevalent at the University of Lagos.

Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, this is why the theme of this year’s conference “Diversification in a Developing Economy: Promoting Academia-Industry collaboration” is most appropriate and in consonance with the mood of the nation. This Conference, therefore, seeks to bring up avenue for exposure to industrialists and entrepreneurs research results that should be taken advantage of while industrialists and other economic operators could challenge the researchers and open up collaborations on issues/problems with their operations or businesses. This is the only way our collective efforts can yield fruits to both the University, the Industry and the National economic development.

I have been informed that this 11th Unilag Annual Research Conference and Fair has received about 415 abstracts and 191 full papers for presentation. This is really encouraging. The University of Lagos is being appropriately repositioned as a Research University. The purpose for our Research Conference and Fair is being fulfilled with all seriousness. We are therefore achieving the desired goal of enthroning excellence in academics and research in the university. Let us here commend all those who have been participating in organizing research-related workshops and seminar as well as those who have worked assiduously to help in achieving these great milestones.

I like to acknowledge the support of the sponsors of the various parts of our research both present and past and urge them to continue to partner with us in championing the course to bridge the gaps between the town and the gown, in transforming our society to a better place for all.
