Landlords Can't Take More Than One Year Rent In Abuja Anymore... old tenants to pay 6 months

This Tenancy Bill shall apply to all Premises within the FCT including business and residential premises unless otherwise specified.

The resolution reads as follow:

It shall be unlawful for a landlord or his agent to demand from a sitting tenant rent in advance of six months from a monthly tenant and one year from a yearly tenant in respect of any premises without prejudice. 
It shall not be unlawful for a sitting tenant to offer or pay rent in excess of a year for a yearly tenant and 6months for a monthly tenant 
It shall be unlawful for a landlord or his agent to demand from a new or would be tenant rent in excess of a year in respect of any premises; It shall not be unlawful for a new or would be tenant to offer or pay rent in excess of a year in respect of any premises. 
Any person who demands rent in access of what is prescribed in this Section shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine of #100,000 or to three months imprisonment.

    This law might not see the light of the day, it can only succeeded on government owns properties, private individuals owners might decided not to rent out their properties or exploit the willing tenants, who is ready to dance to their tunes. The same law was enacted in Lagos, yet some landlords are still collecting more than a year rent as against the tenancy law & nothing happened to them.

  8. This is a good law indeed but let wait and see the implementation methord.
    Govt should please see into the high price of house rent and things in Abuja.
