You Can't Summon Me, Prof Sagay Replies Senate

Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Prof. Itse Sagay has fired back, saying the Senate lacks the power or authority to summon him to appear before its committee on Ethics over alleged disparaging remarks he made against the senators.

Speaking in a chat with INDEPENDENT, Sagay said the Senators lack the power to summon him because he does not fall under the category of persons they can summon.

His words, “They have neither power nor authority to summon me. I don’t come within the group of persons or officials they can summon. I will advise them to ask their lawyers to look very, very closely at the provisions of Sections 82 to 89 of the Constitution”.

Sagay’s invitation is seen as further escalation of the current face-off between the Senate and Presidency which blew open on Tuesday with the Senate’s suspension of the consideration and confirmation of 27 Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) submitted by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He was asked to appear before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to explain why he allegedly described senators as “childish and irresponsible” for pushing President Buhari to sack the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, within two weeks.

The PACAC chairman is also expected to explain why he allegedly said the Senate is “filled with people of questionable character who put personal interest ahead of the nation.”

Are we in banana republic, where certain people can do & undo? If you dare speaks against their interest & pointing at their inadequacy, the next thing is to invite or suspend you. God safe my beloved Nigeria from the hands of selfish people.

  8. Prof, Sagar be careful with your speech saga and Senate committee on ethics has power to summon you based on your national insult against them. Working for the executive doesn't implies a provocative statement against the legislature. The are a separate body that are also a watch dog so the deserve that respect. Other nations are laughing at our extra kindergarten behavior.

  10. What do you mean "The are a separate body that are also a watch dog so the deserve that respect." Mr Bruno? The man (Prof. Sagay)is a SAN and knows his right. It will be in the best interest of the senators to seek legal advice before embarking on these series of embarrassing outings. Nigerians are not amused and they only succeed in making themselves a laughing stalk to the international community. I am personally disappointed in most of the recent happenings in senate.

  15. Buhari unfortunately won't "receive sense" . He is morally flawed, he can't discipline Saraki when he failed to deal with his greedy SGF and Chief of staff.
Your " Jagaban" has been neutralized long ago, Buhari backed Saraki to become the Senate President against Tinubu, who knew the danger of Saraki in the Senate.
Buhari bred sacred cows, so he can't blame anyone for this ranging bull in his China shop.
Buhari is caged, his health is Also unfavorable for him to hustle back into power.
The last 2 yrs of his tenure will not be different, unless mortality set him free.
