Suspect Escapes From Court Room In Lagos, Jumps Into Canal

There was a mild drama at a court after a suspected robber, Segun Mabaoreje, suddenly escaped from the court room in Lagos, fled and jumped into a canal to escape trial.

However, he met his match as both the court officials and the security men pursued him. The security men dived into the canal, apprehended and brought him back to the court room to face his case.

The incident happened at the Magistrates court sitting in Ejigbo, Lagos, where the suspect, Mabaoreje was brought for arraignment.

The prosecutor, Inspector G. Simon, prepared another charge and he was also arraigned for attempting to escape.

The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. L.K.J. Layeni, did not grant him bail as his attempted escape happened in his presence. He ordered that the suspect be remanded in prison custody and adjourned till 6th August, 2018, when he will be brought to court for the offence he had committed before his attempted escape from the court.

The suspect was earlier arrested by the police at Igando Division for burglary and attempt to steal before he was caught.

Mabaoreje was not the only suspect that had tried such in the past, another suspect tried to escape in the same court but failed, as he was charged and remanded in prison. It was also gathered that a young suspect was brought to Ogba Magistrates court; he jumped from the court’s three storey building and died on the spot in his attempt to escape.

After Mabaoreje was re-arrested, he said he was afraid to go to prison and that was why he tried to escape but failed.

He said he was told that the prison was a death trap and that he may not survive if he was taken there. However, his claim was debunked by prison officials who said that the prison was not all that terrible.
